What to do??

I need your suggestions. Let me hammer out your criteria:

While I am trying to find a reliable babysitter I can use all the time (as in, her and no one else), I am also trying to find things for my husband and I to do on date nights other than dinner and a movie. And I need your help, as you'll see why:

The town we live in is relatively small, racially-charged, uni-cultural, and boring. Sure, there are meat-markets I mean dance clubs, a movie theatre, a renowned Shakespeare theatre, a couple bowling alleys, and that's about it. We have 1 Indian restaurant (hubby's not a huge fan), a couple decent Japanese restaurants (hubby's all over this), 1 decent Mexican restaurant (hubby's not a huge fan), and lots of places specializing in Southern cuisine (i.e. fried shoe leather).

We could stay home and play Wii together, but that wouldn't require a babysitter or a new environment, just our tired old living room.

We could go see a movie or play, but those aren't really interactive, and frankly we're tired of seeing movies together all the time.

There is a minor-league baseball league, but neither of us are fans of baseball. There is no hockey (pro, minor, or city-league, but that's what you get in a city that doesn't experience natural ice, I guess), no rollerball, but tons of college ball teams (we're not really into cheering on schools we have no affiliation with).

Studies have shown that couples that experience new things together build longer-lasting, happier relationships. And since I've been feeling pretty lonely, down, and neglected lately, I really want to do something about it, lest my secret-guilty fantasies about leaving take root (only in my blackest moments do I fantasize about this; leaving my family would probably kill me) .

Can anyone help? What do you do on dates?
.

Hmmm...out for desert or just ice cream maybe? or a walk or drive, check out your library (ours has wii tournaments and free movie date nights) bowling, maybe a high school/college theater, I'm not really sure what you are looking fir but sometimes trying something new for both of us works for me and my DH.

I've always found two types of activities to be "bonding":
1. Learning something new
2. Working on a project

It sounds like your local resources are pretty limited, and I'm not sure how "open-minded" your guy would be in terms of activities, but think along the lines of a cooking demonstration, auditing a college class, or - gasp - something like ballroom dancing.

What are his thoughts? I just think it's great that you're making an effort to get out and do something together. That can make all the difference in the world!

I totally feel you. Couple things -

Best date I was ever on (ironically not with my Hubs - didn't even do a second date, but that's besides the point) was totally doable anywhere. Maybe a good way to explore your town, too.
The guy (Dustin? don't remember his name...) made 7 origami swans and hid them all around town. He gave me a letter stating that there were 7 sibling swans that drifted apart during a recent storm, and I was supposed to reunite them, and gave the first clue. Each swan I found had a clue to the next one. Maybe it sounds totally corny - but it was AWESOME. And interactive. Then do coffee or drinks after!

Another thing (kinda similar)- geocaching. google it if you don't know what it is.

Find the closest small town airport and watch planes take off/land. There probably won't be any, but you can talk/make out/watch the stars.

That's it, I'm out of ideas. Hope it helps!

Does your area have a community college? Many of them have community education classes that are fairly inexpensive since they don't grade or give you credits. My area offers lots of classes, ranging from ballroom, latin and swing dance, photography and photoshop, cooking, crafts, and all kinds of workshops. Most classes are either on the weekend or one evening each week.

I'm a big fan of babysitting trades. As far as dating goes, we're best when we walk someplace local. It gives us a chance to talk and hang out. Exercise does us some good, too.

It's been a while. How are you? Talk soon.
